Memories of D-Day

Twenty local people were interviewed in 1994 (the 50th anniversary of D-Day) to share their memories, whether on the beaches, at sea with the Navy or in the air. Our exhibition is now a permanent memorial, available for you to read online. There are also some general panels about the Home Front.

The 60th anniversary (2004)

Harry’s chestful of medals is because he was at Dunkirk, in North Africa and Sicily, then from D-day all the way to Berlin. He was mechanic and never fired a shot in anger; despite carrying a .45 pistol, he was never given any bullets for it. Ted landed at Bernieres-sur-Mer where there is a “Rue du Royal Berkshire Regiment”.

The Home Front
